SCORE DC: Research, Discovery & Creative Direction

Before a camera comes out, every project starts the same way: who is this actually for, and why should they care? This is a look inside that process for a video project with SCORE DC, a small business mentorship organization — the audience thinking, the research, and the creative references that shaped where we landed.

SCORE DC mentee program — finished video

For mentees, it's real, practical help getting a business off the ground. For mentors, it's a way to put decades of experience to use instead of letting it sit unused in retirement. But underneath both is the same honest question we thought the video needed to earn the right to answer: does this actually work, or is it another program that just sounds good on paper?

We looked at how SCORE and similar organizations were already presenting themselves publicly, including a SCORE success story example. A few patterns stood out:

Outside of the category itself, we pulled reference from mission-driven storytelling we admired elsewhere — not to copy it, but to study how other studios earn emotional weight without tipping into melodrama.

Visual references pulled during discovery, exported from our working Figma board:

We don't work from a "beat the competition" mindset — that's ego-driven, and it shows on screen. Our approach is simpler: do what the story actually needs, without the ego. That distinction shaped everything downstream, from tone of voice to how we framed mentors and mentees on camera as equals rather than one "helping" the other.
